Day 89 – My thoughts on this Today Tonight Reportage…

Did any of you get to see the Today Tonight Interview that aired a few nights ago about Lap Band Surgery? A lot of people have asked me what my thoughts are on this reportage. I watched it over the weekend via http://au.todaytonight.yahoo.com/ and as happy as I am for the people that were interviewed as they have lost a tremendous amount of weight I totally TOTALLY disagree with the young man being interviewed who basically said in a round about way that he lost all this weight by eating whatever he liked and did absolutely no exercise.

I understand and can comprehend that for HIM that worked but I do not believe that for the majority of people that would work. In fact I think his comments bring a very negative connotation to the entire lap band surgery. There is too much negativity involved with this surgery as it is. I have mentioned before that a lot of people accuse us of taking the “easy way out” and I do not believe that being cut open and having a foreign object placed on my stomach for the remainder of my life, and all the other little rules we have to abide by as being the “easy way out”. So having said that this interview was damaging in my eyes and I think that this surgery is now going to attract the fuckwits who are only about 10 kilos overweight and its going to take one fuck up of a doctor to start performing this surgery on them and then BAM here we go again more negative crap to deal with.

Also being interviewed was the wonderful Prof O’Brien whom I truly do respect. I think he is a brilliant surgeon. He is not my surgeon but is the Principal Surgeon shall we say at the Bariatric Centre which I attend. I believe Prof O’Brien knows his shit an knows it very well thank you very much but I would have really liked to have spoken to the Prof to see what his opinion of what this naff naff was saying on public broadcast. Sadly, and I say sadly because I am going to drive my surgeon, Mr. Wonderful Surgeon, up the wall as he is going to cop an earful from me and I am pretty sure that Mr. Wonderful Surgeon is going to tell me to ignore the press and media and stick to what I am doing.

This young man being interviewed was nothing like Mikey Robbins who has handled this whole surgery so well and has been so darn honest about the emotions he still struggles with as opposed to this young man who is also a radio DJ (Could he be trying for more publicity for his radio station and radio show? And the fact that he wants to now work in FRONT of a camera as opposed to being a DJ?) He was a tad cocky and that’s cool as if I had lost 80 kilos I too would be cocky but not on public broadcast.

Anyways that’s my 20 cents worth.

As for me and my life I had a really good, productive, happy day. Work was busy as and before I knew it was time to go home. I walked home again today but this time I carried my backpack with my laptop in it, clothes etc and it easily weighed 10 kilos. The walk home killed me and that fucking hill I conquered yesterday nearly and I said nearly conquered me. Each stride and pound up the hill sort of had my body pulling backwards due to the weight of the bag. But my pretties I made it and I did it all by my little fat self. I was so chuffed with myself.

Food wise I haven’t really had much as my appetite has left me again. Not that I am complaining. I had a V8 juice for breakfast and a cup of coffee lunch was a cup of soup and a babybel cheese and dinner which is cooking as we speak is a piece of salmon with some steamed broccoli.

Until tomorrow

I'm glad I have someone else on my side re. the prof. He did my information session and I would have had him band me if not for the fact he is away so often i didn't want to wait that long. He is a great surgeon and I don't agree with those who are saying he was just in it to make a buck and get an ad for his centre. Sometimes your words get misconstrued when they go to air that's all. He is genuinely helping people and that's what's important!

Now as for you miss, you're such a healthy eater you put me to shame. on liquids/mushies i am eating such crapola... yoghurts and ice cream and everything is full of mayonnaise and sauce..... you're a good girl!! also really impressed with the walking but watch your back - i know when i power walk sometimes i unconsciously hunch my back and end up in agony for days afterward... you don't want to undo the good you are doing with the walking by doing your back in.
